What happened, step by step.
Challenge
Helvetia asked how to keep and attract young adults as customers in the 21st century.
What the team learned
Young adults do not want insurance but solutions for their specific needs, available anytime and anywhere. Shared flats change residents often, so adding or replacing flatmates must be effortless.
What they built
Zäme is a mobile app for shared flats. It records shared expenses and settles debts, manages car-sharing and streaming accounts and documents, and splits shared-flat insurance between flatmates.
Impact
Helvetia moved from charging insurance per household to per flatmate. Zäme launched as Flink, and parts of it live on in Smile direct insurance products.

Zäme makes everyday sharing within shared flats an enjoyable and straightforward experience. (The mobile application offers multiple elements that can and should be shared in flats, such as common costs, cars, or even insurances.)
Challenge
How might Helvetia keep and attract young adults as customers considering the challenges of the 21st century?
Solution
Young adults do not want insurance; they want a solution that is tailored to their specific needs.
They also expect a solution that is independent of time and place. Zäme as an ecosystem addresses these needs and enables young adults in shared apartments to share everything that needs to be shared. The prototyped functions of shared flat insurance and expense management are provided to the flat-share residents via the Zäme application.
Impact
With Zäme we created a solution taking care of most of the problems of young adults living in shared flats: insurance, document management, cost splitting. With the business model shift from charging insurance per household to charging per flatmate, Helvetia gained access to more customer data to increase the customer lifecycle value. Zäme was launched as Flink to the market, and elements of the solution are still used in their Smile direct insurance products.
