One academic year of SUGAR: from the Global Kick-Off in October to the SUGAR Expo in June.
allbertoA peer-to-peer platform matching people who outsource daily tasks with people who do them, insured by Generali.GeneraliSt. Gallen CH · Porto PTProblem
Develop a solution that allows young professionals and young families to eliminate as much unwanted mobility as possible.
What they built
allberto connects Askers who want to save time with Taskers who earn money flexibly. Generali makes the exchange risk-free with insurance and social security policies.
Impact
Generali goes beyond selling insurance and improves customers' daily lives. Users save time or earn flexibly, risk-free.
CircuitAn app and in-car extension that plan and accompany seamless road trips in an electric Porsche.PorschePotsdam DE · Karlsruhe DEProblem
With the Taycan, Porsche enters the electric market and user experience matters as much as technology. How might customers of an electric Porsche enjoy a seamless experience?
What they built
CIRCUIT recommends trips to personal taste, books tables and charging stops, transfers everything to the in-car system during the drive and keeps photos and driving statistics afterwards.
Impact
Less planning and no range fear, so owners drive more. Shared memories advertise Porsche and strengthen loyalty.
desyreA retirement-planning platform with a passive savings assistant and an active cockpit across Swiss pillars.PostFinanceSt. Gallen CHProblem
How might the Swiss retirement ecosystem of today and tomorrow be redesigned to meet present and future needs?
What they built
desyre offers two interfaces: the Savings Assistant for users who prefer a passive role and the Retirement Cockpit for active planners, with clear visualisations of goals and family interdependencies.
Impact
A prepared entry into retirement as state systems become less reliable, with financial health even for those who do not plan actively.
Problem
Find new applications and services for Poggipolini's SENS-IN bolt, a fastener with embedded sensors, including a business model for a new market.
What they built
SENS-IN bolts measuring vibration and self-loosening sit at critical points of a roller coaster. Software monitors them continuously and generates pre-filled maintenance reports on a tablet.
Impact
Cheaper, better-documented maintenance for parks and design data for manufacturers. Poggipolini moves from product to service provider.
Problem
Mobility providers in Switzerland are poorly connected and there is no central information source, so travellers cannot use the options that exist.
What they built
Flink delivers customised information streams for 2.8 million commuters, helps plan and optimise multimodal journeys and offers fast alternatives when something goes wrong.
Impact
All information before, during and after a journey, with subscriptions managed in one place and proactive alerts.
FloWasteA computer-vision analytics system that measures plate waste in canteens and guides menus and portions.FoodCloudModena IT · Dublin IEProblem
A third of all food is wasted, a quarter of it in hospitality and food service. FoodCloud asked for a step change in that sector by 2020.
What they built
FloWaste tracks what comes back on plates using computer vision and customer feedback, records waste per diner and feeds gamified awareness campaigns and better ordering decisions.
Impact
Lower disposal costs, up to €200,000 a year for some businesses, and more awareness. FoodCloud can offer the system to companies and redistribute surplus food.
Nu-tanA tool that dispenses and spreads soil supplements in one pass for small organic farms.YanmarMelbourne AU · Kyoto JPProblem
Help small-scale organic farmers reduce physical labour and work more efficiently without breaking their connection to the crops.
What they built
Nu-tan combines dispensing and spreading soil supplements during bed preparation, the most labour-intensive non-crop task, into one movement.
Impact
Less strain and time on bed preparation. The tool adapts to the farm, not the other way round.
OrangeworksHIVE, an in-office multimedia hub that replaces one-off team-building days with short, ongoing sessions.OrangeworksDublin IE · São Paulo BRProblem
Companies outsource team building, and Orangeworks saw a gap for a new approach. How might the corporate team-building experience be redefined for 2020?
What they built
HIVE is an office focal point that invites colleagues into creative thinking, problem-solving and ideation in a safe space, bringing the best of team-building events into daily work.
Impact
Full-day activities shrink to 10 to 20-minute sessions, cutting cost and improving productivity and office culture.
RESTARTA holistic reintegration concept with a printed guide for Ghanaian returnees from Germany.GIZKarlsruhe DEProblem
Ghanaian returnees with lower education lack economic perspectives at home. Support services exist, but their offerings are not transparent.
What they built
RESTART begins in Germany once someone decides to return. A paper-based RESTART GUIDE provides inspiration, motivation and orientation on the economic reintegration journey.
Impact
Returnees get emotional accompaniment and support for training and jobs. GIZ gains trust and a blueprint for other countries of origin.
Safe SpaceA product family that lets cyclists, scooters and buses warn each other through sensors and connectivity.ValeoParis FR · Mannheim DEProblem
Denser city traffic and new mobility types demand more attention from drivers. Valeo asked how to enhance the mobility experience in smart cities with its resources.
What they built
Vulnerable road users and heavy vehicles equip themselves with a Safe Space device. Sensors and connectivity exchange contextual warnings in real time.
Impact
Less stress and fewer misunderstandings on the road. The data can help municipalities improve infrastructure.
WAVEA lighting system with smart LEDs that reduces motion sickness so passengers can read in cars.OSRAMMunich DE · St. Gallen CHProblem
Create a personalised lighting system for future mobility. What will people do in cars once they no longer have to drive?
What they built
Interviews showed people want to read, work or watch films but get motion sick. WAVE's LEDs represent the car's speed, synchronising visual input with the vestibular system.
Impact
A portable solution usable today. With self-driving cars, OSRAM can integrate WAVE into vehicle interiors.
